A classic hits radio station simulcast on both AM and FM, serving Washington County, Pennsylvania, with secondary reach into parts of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Owned by Washington Broadcasting Company, the AM operation runs at 1450 kHz with 1 kW unlimited power, while the FM operates at 95.3 MHz with 2.15 kW effective radiated power, both licensed to Washington, Pennsylvania. WJPA first aired on February 1, 1941, making it one of the last stations the FCC permitted to launch before the United States entered World War II. An early FM incarnation operated at 104.3 MHz but was surrendered to the FCC due to low FM receiver penetration. The station reapplied for FM and returned to air on 95.3 FM on September 1, 1964. During the 1970s, the FM carried album rock as WYTK-FM, then shifted to contemporary country as "K-Country" in 1983 before reverting to simulcast with WJPA AM in the early 1990s. Beyond classic hits music, the station is well-known for sports broadcasting, carrying games for the Washington and Jefferson College football team, the Washington Wild Things minor league baseball team, area high school wrestling, and high school basketball. Daily programming includes named daytime and evening shows with local on-air hosts.
