A VHF FM automated 24-hour weather radio network broadcasting weather information and emergency alerts directly from National Weather Service offices. The system transmits local and regional weather forecasts, hazardous weather outlooks, and civil emergency information including Amber alerts and natural disaster updates. Established beginning in 1960 as an experimental marine weather broadcast, the network expanded nationally and now operates over 1,000 transmitters across all U.S. states and territories, providing coverage to approximately 95 percent of the population. Broadcasts use seven distinct VHF-FM frequencies in the 162.400-162.550 MHz range to prevent interference. The Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology allows listeners to receive alerts only for their designated geographic areas. NOAA Weather Radio operates in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System, providing life-saving severe weather warnings and critical public safety notifications.
