A non-commercial public radio station affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, established in 1945 as a carrier current station before transitioning to full broadcast capabilities in 1957. The station pioneered early freeform radio formats during the 1960s and has maintained a consistent adult album alternative (AAA) format with emphasis on folk, jazz, new music, and avant-garde programming. Home to the nationally distributed NPR music program World Cafe since its development, the station expanded its reach through frequency modification from 88.9 to 88.5 MHz in 1986 to increase signal coverage. The station produces numerous locally originated specialty shows covering diverse musical and cultural interests while maintaining broadcast operations at dedicated facilities in the Roxborough section. Educational and community programming has been central to its mission throughout its operational history.
