The station is owned by iHeartMedia and maintains studios and offices on Presidential Boulevard in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. It is classified as a Class B facility with an effective radiated power of 27,000 watts, transmitting from a site off Wigard Avenue near the Schuylkill River in the Roxborough neighborhood. WUSL also broadcasts in the HD Radio hybrid format, with its HD2 digital subchannel carrying a contemporary hit radio format branded as TikTok Radio. The 98.9 frequency has a long history in Philadelphia broadcasting. It signed on in 1961 as WPBS, a call sign referencing the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper, which held common ownership with the station at the time. That incarnation carried an easy listening format consisting largely of instrumental arrangements and Broadway and Hollywood showtunes, marketed at one point under the name Velvet Stereo. After the newspaper sold the station to LIN Broadcasting in 1976, the call letters were changed to WUSL, an abbreviation representing U.S. Route 1, a major north-south corridor through the region. Under new ownership the format shifted to soft adult contemporary programming mixed with standards that had crossed into pop chart territory during the 1960s and 1970s. A brief pivot to country music occurred in mid-1981 under the Continuous Country, US-99FM branding before the station eventually transitioned to the urban format it carries today.
