The station signed on July 4, 1976, from Manahawkin with a Top 40 format, opening its broadcast history with "More, More, More" by Andrea True Connection. It was originally licensed to the Jersey Shore Broadcasting Corporation, founded by Joseph J. Knox Jr. and Brent McNally, and affiliated initially with the ABC Radio Network before switching to AP Radio.
