Operating at 92.3 MHz with an effective radiated power of 25,000 watts as a Class C FM station, this commercial broadcaster serves the Las Vegas, Nevada metropolitan area with an active rock radio format. It is owned by Lotus Communications, with studios and offices on West Flamingo Road in Spring Valley, Clark County. The transmitter is located on Potosi Mountain in Blue Diamond, southwest of the Las Vegas Valley. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology, with its HD2 digital subchannel carrying a simulcast of sister station KKGK's sports radio programming. The station signed on the air on September 1, 1966, as KULA, initially simulcasting country music programming with AM sister station KVEG (970 AM). During the 1970s, the FM signal continued as a country outlet under the call letters KTRI, affiliated with the ABC Information Network. Around 1980, it became KENO-FM, matching the Top 40 format of AM sister station KENO (1460 AM) and affiliating with the ABC Contemporary Network. The format shifted to album rock on February 8, 1981, with The Who's "Long Live Rock" serving as the first song played in the new format. The station adopted the KOMP call letters at that time and has maintained a rock-oriented format ever since. Notable on-air personalities from the early rock era included Big Marty, Leslie Blied, Todd Fowler, Dice Martin, and Lark Williams. The station's call letters, KOMP, are derived from a phonetic rendering suggesting "comp," and the station has long operated under variations of the slogan "FM92."
