A non-commercial, student-run campus radio station broadcasting at 90.5 FM, licensed to Fort Collins, Colorado and affiliated with Colorado State University. The station operates at 10,000 watts, providing a signal that reaches east to Greeley, south to Longmont, and north to the Wyoming border, covering an estimated audience of over 250,000 people. It is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation, ranking among the largest college radio stations in the United States by reach. KCSU first went on air on September 21, 1964, initially broadcasting at 800 watts at 90.9 MHz. The station began as a student-operated outlet offering jazz, classical music, news, interviews, and public affairs programming. In September 1977, management transitioned to a professional model following financial difficulties and student dissatisfaction with programming representation. In 1981, the station adopted a classical music format, which proved controversial. By September 1983, KCSU boosted its signal to 10,000 watts and shifted to its current frequency at 90.5 MHz. The station's format is music-intensive, concentrating on college and alternative genres. In addition to music programming, KCSU provides newscasts, sports updates, public affairs talk shows, and public service announcements. Student journalists at the station produce regular reporting on university affairs, local Fort Collins issues, and state news, with coverage also extending to CSU athletics.
