The station signed on January 5, 1973, as a student-run operation using a 10-watt transmitter on 88.9 MHz, audible only in the immediate university vicinity. In the early 1980s, the university obtained FCC approval to increase power to 60,000 watts and shift to the 91.3 MHz frequency.
