The sole locally based AM station in Crookston, Minnesota, broadcasting on 1260 kHz with a hybrid format that shifts from news and talk programming during daytime hours to classic rock in the evening. Though licensed to Crookston, the station draws a substantial portion of its audience from the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks metropolitan area across the North Dakota border. It also reaches listeners via two FM translators: K221GU at 92.1 FM in Grand Forks and K289CE at 105.7 FM in Crookston. The station has received the national Edward R. Murrow Award multiple times and has been recognized by the Associated Press for excellence in its digital presence. Sports coverage is a prominent part of programming, with KROX serving as the local home for Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins broadcasts, as well as University of Minnesota Crookston athletic events including football, volleyball, and basketball. It additionally carries Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Wild, and Gopher sports across football, basketball, and hockey. At the high school level, the station provides play-by-play coverage of Crookston High School sports including football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, baseball, and softball. The station began broadcasting on April 25, 1948, originally on 1050 kHz with one kilowatt of daytime power, and was initially owned by the Crookston Broadcasting Company. It moved to its current 1260 kHz frequency in 2000 following a swap with a sister station.
