A National Public Radio member station operating at 90.3 FM, licensed to and broadcasting from Crested Butte, Colorado. The station was established in December 1986 and has operated continuously since, making it one of the longer-running community radio outlets on Colorado's Western Slope. Its studio is located in Crested Butte, with a primary transmitter on Sunlight Ridge in Mt. Crested Butte and translators serving the communities of Almont and Gunnison, extending coverage throughout the upper Gunnison Valley. In June 2010, the Sunlight Ridge transmitter was upgraded to broadcast in HD alongside its analog signal. KBUT is operated by Crested Butte Mountain Educational Radio, Inc., a nonprofit organization. In April 2012, the FCC granted a construction permit to increase the station's effective radiated power to 1,000 watts. The station produces approximately 46 locally created music shows each week, covering a notably broad range of genres including classical, jazz, rock, and hip-hop. This locally driven programming philosophy distinguishes KBUT from many public radio affiliates that rely primarily on network programming. The station also produces local and regional news segments and conducts periodic pledge drives to sustain its nonprofit operations. It maintains an online stream, making its programming accessible beyond its over-the-air footprint in the mountain communities it serves.
