A commercial radio station licensed to Benton Harbor, Michigan, operating at 94.9 MHz FM with studios on East Napier Avenue. The station broadcasts a news, talk, and sports format, transmitting at 2,200 watts from an antenna in Sodus Township near US-31, with a signal covering much of the Michiana region and reaching as far south as South Bend, Indiana. It is owned by Mid-West Family Broadcasting, a company headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. The WSJM callsign traces its origins to a sister station on the AM band. The FM frequency was originally assigned in 1964 as a classical music outlet under WSJM-FM, reportedly one of the world's earliest fully automated radio stations. The automation system was designed by Brian Brown in 1963 and used telephone stepping relays to control reel-to-reel tape decks for unattended broadcast operation. The callsign was changed to WIRX in 1979 and remained dormant until 2008, when the WSJM identifier was reassigned to the 94.9 MHz frequency after the AM counterpart transitioned to an alternative rock format. Current programming centers on a local morning talk show, with syndicated news and sports content occupying the remaining dayparts. Each hour begins with updates from ABC News Radio. The station carries play-by-play sports coverage from the Detroit Tigers Radio Network, the Detroit Lions Radio Network, and the Michigan Sports Network, and serves as a partial affiliate of Fox Sports Radio.
