A commercial AM radio station licensed in Baltimore, Maryland, operating on 680 kHz under the ownership of WCBM Maryland, Inc. The station broadcasts a talk radio format and identifies itself as "Talk Radio 680 WCBM." Studios and offices are situated on York Road in Lutherville, adjacent to Interstate 695, the Baltimore Beltway. During daytime hours, WCBM transmits at 50,000 watts, the maximum power permitted for AM stations in the United States. Nighttime operation requires a reduction to 20,000 watts to protect co-channel stations, and the station employs a directional antenna using a six-tower array at all times. The transmitter site is located off Marriottsville Road in Randallstown. WCBM first signed on in March 1924, licensed to Charles Schwarz on 1310 kHz. Its inaugural broadcast aired on the evening of March 28, with studios at the Hotel Chateau at Charles Street and North Avenue. The call letters have historically been associated with the initials of "Chateau Baltimore Maryland." Following establishment of the Federal Radio Commission in 1927, the station navigated a series of frequency reassignments through the regulatory standardization era.
