The broader network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began marine weather broadcasts experimentally in Chicago and New York City; the service expanded to serve the general public in coastal regions through the 1960s and early 1970s before growing into the comprehensive nationwide system in operation today.
