Voice Of America Africa

An international broadcasting service operated by Voice of America, the largest and oldest of the United States government's international broadcasters. Established in 1942 during World War II, VOA initially served as a counter-propaganda instrument against Axis misinformation before expanding its mission to include cultural diplomacy through American music and news programming. The Africa service targets audiences across the African continent, particularly in countries where press freedom is limited or independent journalism is restricted. VOA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is overseen by the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), an independent federal agency funded through annual Congressional appropriations. During the Cold War, VOA significantly expanded its operations as part of broader efforts to counter communist influence globally. The broadcaster has maintained a consistent mandate of delivering uncensored news and information to audiences living under restrictive governments. As of 2022, VOA reached a weekly worldwide audience of approximately 326 million people across its various language services, employing 961 staff and operating with an annual budget of $267.5 million.
