A non-commercial, public radio station licensed to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, operating at 88.5 MHz as the National Public Radio affiliate for the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point media market, commonly known as the Piedmont Triad. Owned by Wake Forest University, the station serves 32 counties across central North Carolina and south-central Virginia, broadcasting with 60,000 watts as a Class C1 facility. Its transmitter tower is located on Old Evans Farm Road in Welcome, North Carolina. Programming is also distributed via FM translator W261CK at 100.1 FM in Boone. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology, with a classical music format on its HD2 digital subchannel and the BBC World Service on HD3. On weekdays, programming draws from NPR and other public radio networks and includes Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, 1A, Here and Now, The World, On Point, Marketplace, and the BBC World Service, supplemented by local news updates. Late-night hours feature classical music. Weekend schedules incorporate public radio specialty programs such as This American Life, The New Yorker Radio Hour, On The Media, The TED Radio Hour, The Moth Radio Hour, Latino USA, and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me, alongside music programs including American Routes, Retro Cocktail Hour, and The Martha Bassett Show. The station traces its origins to a student-operated experimental station at Wake Forest College, established in a rooming house in the town of Wake Forest beginning in the fall of 1946. With student fundraising support, a full license was obtained by 1948, with an official sign-on date of April 19, 1948. Local coverage includes issues across the Piedmont region, such as education, government policy, economic development, and community affairs in Guilford County, Greensboro, and the wider Triad area.
