An NPR member station operating at 89.3 MHz FM in Binghamton, New York, with an effective radiated power of 11.5 kilowatts. The station is licensed to the WSKG Public Telecommunications Council, a cooperative non-profit organization established under the auspices of the State University of New York Board of Regents and the New York State Department of Education. Due to the hilly terrain of the Southern Tier region, the signal is extended through several repeater frequencies across south-central New York. WSKG-FM began broadcasting in October 1975. For most of its history the station maintained a format centered on classical music, NPR talk programs, and NPR news, with jazz on Friday evenings and folk music on Saturday evenings. On February 3, 2019, programming was restructured so that the main WSKG-FM frequency shifted to an all-talk and news format drawing from NPR and BBC sources. The classical music programming migrated to a separate stream. The station produces local journalism for the Southern Tier and surrounding communities alongside its national public radio content. WSKG is one of several broadcast properties operated by the WSKG Public Telecommunications Council, which also operates WSKG-TV and WSQX-FM.
