The station began broadcasting in 1979 under the call sign KDWZ with a Top 40 (CHR) format. In 1981, with the arrival of a competing Top 40 outlet, the station transitioned to country music and adopted the KYCK call letters — pronounced "kick" — which it has maintained ever since. Owned by Leighton Broadcasting, KYCK competes primarily with iHeartMedia's KSNR "100 Country" in the regional market.
