Owned by Cumulus Media, the station operates as a Class C FM outlet with an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts, with its transmitter located on Fort Argyle Road in unincorporated Chatham County. The station signed on June 18, 1972, founded by J. Curtis Lewis Jr., a former mayor of Savannah, and its call letters reflect the founder's initials. For much of its early history it carried an easy listening format featuring instrumentals, soft vocals, big band music, and adult standards. The station later transitioned through adult contemporary before adopting its current country format. It carries the syndicated Kincaid and Dallas morning program, which originates from WKHX in Atlanta. WJCL-FM serves as the secondary Emergency Alert System radio station for the Savannah region.
