A secondary service of KUER-FM, a public radio station owned by the University of Utah with studios at the Eccles Broadcast Center on campus and its main transmitter on Farnsworth Peak. KUER-FM first broadcast on June 5, 1960, as an educational station emphasizing classical music, becoming a regional service in 1962 after its transmitter moved to Mount Vision in the Oquirrh Mountains. The station carries programming from NPR and other public radio distributors alongside local Utah news coverage. In the 1970s and 1980s, it developed a hybrid format combining daytime classical music and nighttime jazz, each with long-tenured on-air personalities. Classical music was removed from the schedule in 2001 amid competitive pressure from KBYU-FM, a decision that prompted listener outcry but did not significantly reduce donations. At the same time, the station launched RadioWest, a local and regional news discussion program focused on Utah and the western United States. Nightly jazz was removed in 2015, completing the transition to an all-news and talk format. The KUER-2 service carries BBC World Service programming.
