Owned by iHeartMedia and licensed to Richfield, the station transmits from the KMSP Tower in Shoreview and operates auxiliary facilities at the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis, with studios in St. Louis Park. The station traces its history to 1951, when the Tedesco brothers launched WCOW on the AM dial at 1590 kHz in South St. Paul, programming country and old-time music. After transitioning through a female-oriented format under the call letters WISK and moving to 630 kHz, the station was acquired by Crowell-Collier Broadcasting, which brought a California-influenced Top 40 format to Minnesota. Subsequent ownership changes carried the property through multiple hands before the format was eventually transferred to the FM dial. An FM companion launched in 1976 when Doubleday Broadcasting acquired the 101.3 MHz frequency; as FM listenership grew through the late 1970s and 1980s, the Top 40 identity migrated there.
