The station, known as "New Country 105-1," carries a mainstream country format on its main channel, with HD Radio subchannels dedicated to classic country under the name The Ranch and a younger-skewing country format called The Wolf. Its transmitter is situated in the hills above Folsom, and the studios are located in North Sacramento near the American River. The frequency first signed on February 21, 1960, as KHIQ, operating with a "beautiful music" format before transitioning through several ownership and format changes. The station adopted its country format in the mid-1980s and established itself as a dominant country outlet in the Sacramento market. In 2017, CBS Radio announced a merger with Entercom, which required divestiture of KNCI to comply with ownership limits; Bonneville International assumed operations under a local marketing agreement and subsequently acquired the station outright in 2018.
