The station's origins trace back to the spring of 1977, when it began as a cable radio operation under the call letters KAZU while the university's student association pursued a formal FM license from the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC granted the construction permit in the spring of 1979, and a broadcast tower was erected atop the Compton Union Building that August. Following a period of technical testing, the station went on the air on September 20, 1979, broadcasting from the CUB's third floor at 8:26 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time — coinciding with the first day of fall semester registration. KZUU operates as an educational non-commercial service with a student-led programming format. The station actively recruits student volunteers as DJs, welcoming participants regardless of prior broadcasting experience. Its programming reflects the interests of the student body and the broader university community. In addition to music programming, KZUU accepts underwriting support from local businesses and campus organizations in exchange for on-air mentions, consistent with non-commercial broadcasting guidelines. The station has been associated with the regional music scene, including involvement with events such as the Treefort Music Festival, a multi-day independent music event held annually in Boise, Idaho.
