First authorized in 1935, making it one of the longest-running radio stations in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, the station's call sign was assigned from an alphabetical list of available call letters at the time of authorization. It operates alongside sister station KPTX-FM, which has served the region since 1981. Programming includes a country music format as well as a daily community call-in program, "West Texas Hotline," which airs weekday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. with a simulcast on KPTX-FM. News updates run at the top of every hour around the clock. During the autumn months, the station broadcasts a "West Texas Football Scoreboard Show" on Friday nights covering high school football across the region. KPTX-FM serves as the official Dallas Cowboys Radio Network affiliate for the Pecos, Monahans, and Kermit areas. The station emphasizes community service and local engagement as core aspects of its identity.
