Soca music originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1970s as a fusion of calypso with Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian rhythms, created to revive traditional calypso among younger audiences. The genre's name derives from a portmanteau of "soul" and "calypso." Its development involved complex multi-track recording techniques pioneered at studios such as KH Studios in Trinidad. From the 1980s onward, soca evolved into numerous distinctive styles including groovy soca, power soca, ragga soca, chutney soca, and parang soca. Brooklyn emerged as a major center for soca production from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s, with immigrant-owned record labels such as Straker's Records and Charlie's Records facilitating the music's international expansion. The genre continues to incorporate contemporary influences, including Bollywood elements, bhangra, and Punjabi pop, maintaining its characteristic foundation of loud, fast percussive beats with synthesized drum sounds and synthesizers replacing traditional horn sections in modern performances.
