The broadcaster aims to provide listeners with a broad perspective on global events through national programs like The Stephanie Miller Show and The Thom Hartmann Show, while also fostering a sense of community among its audience. The station emphasizes its role as a platform for voices and perspectives often underrepresented in mainstream media, striving to create a space for open dialogue and engagement. The station's programming includes a variety of talk shows and special events. Current hosts featured on the station include Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Amy Goodman, Brad Friedman, Santita Jackson, Rick Smith, and Patti Vasquez. The station previously aired programs featuring prominent figures such as Al Franken, Mike Malloy, Rachel Maddow, Steve Earl, and Ring of Fire with Mike Papantonio, as well as Democracy Radio’s Ed Schultz. Beyond talk radio, the station also promotes local events and performances, such as Ten Thousand Things Theater’s “Men on Boats,” a reimagining of the Powell expedition, and “The Cake,” a comedy exploring themes of family and acceptance. Additionally, the station provides a platform for children’s theatre productions and comedic performances, like those by Lewis Black. The station's history began in November 2003 when Minnesota attorney Janet Robert and former Congressman Bill Luther founded J.R. Broadcasting. Their motivation stemmed from concerns about the influence of right-wing talk radio following the 2002 elections. Inspired by MIT professor Steve VanEvera and a book exploring the rise of conservative political power, they acquired the station in 2004, coinciding with the debut of Air America Radio. The station’s programming evolved over time, with hosts transitioning to other media platforms or entering public service. In October 2013, long-time employee Chad Larson assumed ownership, continuing the original vision of Robert and Luther. The station operates digitally, offering live and on-demand listening options across various platforms. It emphasizes its commitment to local truth and unfiltered dialogue, distinguishing itself as a community-focused resource. The broadcaster actively encourages listeners to share the station with their friends and neighbors, reinforcing its identity as more than just a radio station – it's a community hub. The station’s website features announcements about upcoming events, including theatrical performances and comedic shows, further highlighting its engagement with the local community.
