Central Pennsylvania's only National Public Radio member station, licensed to the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees as part of WPSU Penn State. The flagship signal at 91.5 FM is rebroadcast on 90.1 FM, with both signals transmitting in HD. Together the stations reach more than 450,000 listeners across 13 central and north-central Pennsylvania counties, broadcasting 24 hours a day. The station traces its history to December 6, 1953, when it signed on as WDFM, conceived by the Class of 1951 as a gift to the university. Its original purpose was to provide hands-on training for students interested in radio communications. Early programming was constrained by agreements with commercial stations in the region, limiting content to jazz, folk, Broadway musicals, Western, and classical music — though adventurous DJs occasionally pushed those boundaries by playing artists such as Elvis Presley. Production facilities are located along Innovation Park Boulevard outside State College. Programming draws from NPR, PRI, and locally produced content, spanning news, features, and music. The station covers regional news across Pennsylvania, including politics, education, health, and local government affairs.
