Part of the nationwide NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards network, this automated 24-hour VHF FM station broadcasts weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. The network to which this station belongs operates as a continuous service delivering local and regional weather forecasts, climate summaries, marine and coastal water forecasts, and hazardous weather outlooks. During severe weather events, programming is condensed to prioritize hazardous weather statements, special weather bulletins, short-term forecasts, and tropical weather summaries. Beyond meteorological content, the network is integrated into the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System and may broadcast non-weather emergency information including national security statements, natural disaster information, Amber alerts, civil emergencies, evacuation orders, and other public safety hazards. Automated broadcast technology allows for efficient recycling and regular updating of programming segments across all transmitters in the network. The origins of the nationwide system date to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began experimental VHF broadcasts of marine weather information in Chicago and New York. Broadcasts expanded through the 1960s and early 1970s to serve the general public in coastal and inland areas. By the early 1970s, dozens of cities were served by the network using the 162 MHz frequency band. The network has since grown to blanket the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and surrounding territories. Weather radios capable of receiving these broadcasts are commercially available throughout the United States and Canada, with particular prevalence in regions prone to severe weather including tornadoes and hurricanes.
