It is owned by Midwest Communications, Inc., which acquired the station along with eight other properties in the Evansville cluster — including sister stations WIKY-FM, WLFW, and WSTO — through a $72 million purchase from South Central Communications that was finalized in September 2014. The call letters WABX carry a storied history. From 1960 to 1984, WABX was the identity of a widely influential freeform and progressive rock station in Detroit, Michigan, known by the slogan "The station that glows in the dark." After the Detroit station changed hands and later adopted a country format as WYCD, the WABX call sign was briefly assigned to a 990 AM frequency in Michigan before ceasing operations in 1988. The current station's logo is closely modeled on the Detroit WABX branding from the 1970s, deliberately evoking that heritage. In addition to its classic rock music programming, the station serves its regional community through local news coverage, event listings, and public service initiatives.
