WVUM FM 90.5

A non-commercial college radio station operating at 90.5 FM, licensed to Coral Gables, Florida, and broadcasting to the Miami metropolitan area with an over-the-air signal of 5.9 kilowatts directional reach. The station is owned by WVUM, Inc., a corporation governed by an advisory board of faculty and students at the University of Miami; all on-air talent and station management positions are held by enrolled students, with most roles volunteer-based and select management positions compensated. WVUM was founded in 1967 as an unlicensed pirate radio station operating from the Eaton Hall dormitory, discovered by the FCC shortly after its launch. The University of Miami subsequently registered the station formally, eventually obtaining a broadcast license. The station has since developed into a licensed outlet offering music programming with a notable electronic and alternative music orientation, alongside public affairs, news content, and sports programming. The station serves as the flagship broadcaster for Miami Hurricanes athletics, airing most events live with commentary from student sports staff. Since February 2011, WVUM's sports department has also provided broadcasts for the university's web stream on hurricanesports.com. The station has been a recurring presence at prominent Miami cultural events, including Art Basel in Miami Beach, Ultra Music Festival, and Miami Music Week.
