Broadcasting at 89.3 MHz FM, this non-profit public radio station is owned and operated by Rocky Mountain Public Media Inc. and holds a mission to provide distinctive music, news, and informational programming reflecting the values and cultural diversity of its listener community. The station traces its origins to the early 1980s, when Hugo Morales of the organization Radio Bilingüe sought to establish a Hispanic radio presence in the Denver metropolitan area. Florence Hernández-Ramos, a University of Colorado at Boulder graduate who had studied at the Colorado School of Law and worked as a paralegal in the Colorado attorney general's office, played a pivotal role in bringing the station to air. She conducted research on licensing and funding, secured the necessary grants, arranged the purchase of broadcasting equipment, assembled a board of directors, and established staff orientation and training programs. The station first signed on August 29, 1985, originally owned and operated by Denver Educational Broadcasting. Since 1994, it has broadcast from the Five Points Media Center at 2900 Welton Street in Denver's Five Points neighborhood, a historically significant African American and Hispanic cultural district. While the jazz format is its primary identity, the station retains its roots as a Hispanic-controlled outlet, incorporating news, public service announcements, and coverage of Hispanic and other minority community affairs. In January 2013, the station merged into the PBS member network Rocky Mountain PBS. In 2019, a ten-year Local Marketing Agreement was signed with the Open Media Foundation, launching Denver Open Media on a high-definition subchannel.
