It first signed on as KQRO on October 15, 1960, initially broadcasting classical and orchestral music before going silent and returning in 1962. In 1965, following its purchase by Elkins Institute of Radio and Electronics, it became KEIR and was used as a training facility, broadcasting a middle-of-the-road easy listening format from a studio in downtown Dallas.
