The station was among the first FM outlets to begin stereo broadcasting within a year of its 1961 sign-on from one of the highest peaks in the region. Originally starting with classical music programming, the station gradually evolved through adult contemporary and soft rock formats before establishing itself as a full-time rock station by 1980. In 1984, it gained distinction as the world's first radio station to broadcast compact discs. The station maintains a playlist balancing classic rock from the 1970s and 1980s with active rock from subsequent decades, establishing itself as a consistent top-rated outlet in its market.
