A non-profit NPR affiliate radio station owned and operated by Morgan State University, a historically Black university, with studios located in the School of Global Journalism and Communication and a transmitter on Hillen Road. The station launched on January 10, 1977, initially broadcasting 18 hours a day under a "black progressive" format that encompassed jazz, Caribbean music, gospel, blues, soul, and album tracks by Black artists. Named 1999 Jazz Station of the Year by Gavin Magazine, the station developed a reputation for substantive coverage of issues relevant to Baltimore's Black community, including race, politics, and social affairs. It hosts intense public affairs discussions and has been noted for addressing sensitive topics such as racism and sexuality. Although situated on a university campus, the majority of its staff are professionals rather than students, though it actively incorporates student interns and volunteers who gain hands-on broadcast experience. Contemporary programming includes local and national news in partnership with NPR, arts and culture coverage, sports reporting focused on Morgan State University athletics, and a range of public affairs content. The station serves both the university community and the broader Baltimore metropolitan area.
