Radio Romania Actualitati

This public radio broadcaster manages a comprehensive array of national and local radio channels, accessible via FM, AM, and internet streaming. Its programming is centered on news, talk, and current affairs, providing informational content to a broad listenership. The organizational structure supports both national reach through its primary stations and localized content delivery via a regional network, all operating under a common brand. The institution's roots are in a pro-radio movement that emerged in the mid-1920s, spearheaded by Professor Dragomir Hurmuzescu. Initial experimental broadcasts took place in 1925, followed by regular transmissions throughout 1926 and 1927, facilitated by "The Friends of Radio Association" and the University Electrotechnical Institute. A significant technological advancement occurred in 1927 with the installation of a shortwave emitter, enabling the first transatlantic experimental broadcasts, including a notable instance where a gramophone recording was clearly received in Boston, United States. The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company was formally established in March 1928. The inaugural official radio transmission was broadcast on November 1, 1928, at 5:00 PM, with Professor Hurmuzescu, then president of the Administration Council, officiating. Further innovation in the 1930s saw engineer Constantin Zablovschi establish a transatlantic radio link between Bucharest and New York. The network encompasses several distinct national stations, each with a specific programming focus. One flagship station delivers a blend of news and pop music, while another is dedicated to rural affairs and folk music. Cultural content is provided by a station featuring classical music, theatre, and news, complemented by a specialized classical music channel with limited reception. The international service broadcasts on three channels, offering content in Romanian, English, French, Aromanian, Spanish, German, Italian, Serbian, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, and Arabic. The broadcaster also supports cultural initiatives such as a national radio theatre and a station tailored for younger audiences. The regional network, which includes stations like București FM, Radio Cluj, Radio Constanța, Radio Craiova, Radio Iași, Radio Reșița, Radio Târgu Mureș, and Radio Timișoara, prioritizes regional news, programs for minority communities, and a music selection that spans oldies and pop. This regional offering also features a seasonal program during the summer months and extends its reach to a station in Moldova, demonstrating a commitment to diverse public service broadcasting across various formats and geographic areas.
