KANW FM 89.1 streams live from Albuquerque NM, United States, on Tuninga Radio.
This radio station offers diverse programming.
A non-commercial public radio station broadcasting at 89.1 FM, owned and operated by the Albuquerque Public Schools, making it one of the few public radio stations in the United States run by a school district. It holds the distinction of being the oldest FM radio station in New Mexico, having first signed on the air in October 1950, originally founded to air classroom educational broadcasts and provide broadcasting training for students. On weekdays, mornings are dedicated to NPR news programming including Morning Edition, Fresh Air, On Point, and 1A. Afternoons and evenings shift to New Mexico music and locally produced public radio content. Weekend programming broadens to include classical music, classic country, and additional NPR offerings such as The New Yorker Radio Hour, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and The Moth Radio Hour. KANW also operates KANW-HD2, a secondary digital subchannel carrying all-news and information programming, which is simultaneously broadcast on FM translator stations including KANM 90.3 in Grants. The main KANW signal is simulcast across several transmitters, extending coverage to Santa Rosa, Gallup, Las Vegas, and Encino in New Mexico. In 2016, the station expanded its network by acquiring two former Air 1 Christian radio outlets in Grants and Gallup from the Educational Media Foundation. A 2021 collaboration with KEDP in Las Vegas, New Mexico, further extended the station's reach, with an FCC license transfer filing submitted to bring KEDP under Albuquerque Board of Education control.
