The station is a member of National Public Radio (NPR) and an affiliate of both the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) and American Public Media (APM). It serves as the flagship radio property of the WGBH Educational Foundation, which additionally operates television stations WGBH-TV and WGBX-TV in Boston, WGBY-TV in Springfield, and WCAI-FM on Cape Cod. The call letters derive from Great Blue Hill, a 635-foot elevation in Milton, Massachusetts, within the Blue Hills Reservation, where the station's FM transmitter is located. Great Blue Hill represents the highest natural point in the greater Boston area. The station broadcasts a news-and-information format during daytime hours, carrying NPR News programs and PRX's The World—a public radio program co-produced by WGBH and PRX—and transitions to jazz music programming during evening and nighttime hours. Prior to December 2009, the station carried a mixed format incorporating local jazz and blues programming under the tagline "Boston's NPR Arts & Culture Station," distinguishing it from all-news competitor WBUR-FM.
