A listener-supported community public radio service, the station operates under the umbrella of Northwestern Michigan College. Its programming is developed and presented by a diverse volunteer corps drawn from the surrounding Grand Traverse area. These volunteers include college students, alumni, and employees, alongside community members ranging from experienced broadcasters to individuals new to radio, all contributing a wide array of backgrounds and musical knowledge. The station's origins trace back to 1967, when it began as a student organization broadcasting to dormitories via carrier current. It made its FM debut in 1979 on 90.9 FM with a power of 10 watts. In 1981, its broadcast power increased to 150 watts, extending its coverage to Traverse City and a six-mile radius. This expansion coincided with a growing community orientation, leading to increased participation from non-student volunteers and programming designed to serve the broader community. Further development occurred in 1997 when the station boosted its power to 600 watts and moved to its current frequency of 90.7 FM. This change significantly expanded its reach, allowing the signal to cover six counties in northwest Michigan: Grand Traverse, Wexford, Antrim, Leelanau, Benzie, and Charlevoix. The station is managed by a college employee who has been involved with the station since 2000, bringing experience in college and community radio dating back to 1987. Its schedule features a variety of programs, reflecting the diverse interests and expertise of its volunteer staff.
