A non-commercial FM radio station operating at 91.1 MHz on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. The station broadcasts at 14,000 watts, covering a radius of approximately 50 to 60 miles around the campus. Mississippi State's campus radio history begins with WMSB, a student-run low-power FM outlet that operated from the early 1970s until it ceased broadcasting permanently at the end of the spring 1986 semester. WMSB was founded during the fall of 1971 in a freshman dormitory, using an FM stereo transmitter originally built as a high school science fair project. The station initially broadcast under the call letters RHOM before receiving the WMSB designation from the FCC. It operated from studios in Lee Hall and broadcast at 10 watts on 89.1 MHz from 1974 onward. The format was primarily album-oriented rock, supplemented by hourly jazz programming and African-American oriented weekend schedules beginning in 1979. After an eight-year absence following WMSB's closure, the campus radio station returned on March 21, 1994 under the new call letters WMSV and the slogan "Radio With a Vision." At launch, the station programmed a blend of alternative rock and album-oriented rock, also broadcasting specialty programs devoted to blues, jazz, and other genres.
