A non-commercial FM radio station licensed to Pacific Grove, California, and serving the Monterey Bay area. Owned and operated by California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), it is a listener-supported public radio station broadcasting a news, talk, and information format. The station holds network affiliate status with National Public Radio (NPR) and maintains studios and offices in Gavilan Hall on the CSUMB campus in Seaside. It operates at an effective radiated power of 3,100 watts from a transmitter on Saddle Road in Monterey, with programming extended via FM translators at 89.5 MHz in Santa Cruz and 91.3 MHz in Palo Colorado Canyon. The station began broadcasting in August 1977 from downtown Pacific Grove as a community radio outlet serving the south Monterey Bay area, initially running at 10 watts with approximately 90 volunteers. Early programming was managed by a board of directors operating under The Great Silence Broadcasting Foundation. Coverage expanded in 1978 when the signal was added to the Monterey cable system, and the transmitter relocated to Hidden Hills east of Monterey in 1980 to reach the broader Monterey Bay area. A studio fire in the late 1990s briefly took the station off the air before temporary facilities were established. The station later transitioned to CSUMB's ownership, gaining stability and institutional support. Today, the station covers local and regional news across the Monterey Bay area, including reporting on labor, environment, transportation, and community affairs.
