A contemporary hit radio station licensed in West Texas, owned by Foster Communications, a regional broadcasting company with deep roots in the area. The station's history dates to January 1967, when it signed on as KWFR-FM, one of the few Top 40-formatted FM stations in the United States at a time when the format was almost exclusively an AM phenomenon. The call letters changed to KIXY in 1970, and the station began broadcasting in stereo in 1973. Its early decades were marked by ownership turbulence: sold in 1978 to a Chicago-based consortium, the stations became the subject of litigation when the original owner alleged the buyers had materially reduced their value in violation of the sale agreement. A federal jury heard the case in early 1984, and Foster reacquired the properties shortly thereafter. By 1987, Foster had aligned his regional station group—including outlets in Sonora and Ozona—to simulcast the flagship's signal with local news inserts for their respective areas. A subsequent 1988 sale attempt to a Georgia-based company called Radioactivity, Inc., led by an individual claiming family ties to Dallas Cowboys founder Clint Murchison, ultimately did not proceed. The station has remained under Foster Communications' stewardship since, broadcasting a contemporary hit format alongside local news programming serving the West Texas region.
