A non-commercial educational FM radio station broadcasting at 89.7 MHz, licensed to the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri but fully funded and operated by students at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. The station is governed by a seven-member executive board elected annually from the body of active disc jockeys, with all programming provided by volunteer student DJs and all other station functions performed by students. KMNR operates as a free-format station, meaning individual DJs select all programming content at their discretion, with the exception of standard educational public interest productions. As of late 2024, the station listed 78 active DJs. The station aims to serve the students, faculty, and staff of Missouri S&T as well as the broader Phelps County community with educational, entertaining, and informative programming. The station traces its origins to the early 1960s, when Missouri School of Mines students including Roger Beckman established an informal dormitory radio station informally called KMFA, housed in the basement of Altman Hall with egg carton acoustic treatment. Beckman subsequently proposed a formal campus-owned student station to Student Council, which relayed the proposal to the administration. The project was approved but initially deferred before eventually culminating in the licensed station now operating as KMNR. Beyond regular broadcasting, the station organizes on-campus concert events, including shows on the RC/UC lawn featuring national and regional musical acts.
