A non-commercial AM radio station broadcasting at 1370 kHz, it is a member station of National Public Radio (NPR) and operates under the ownership of the WXXI Public Broadcasting Council. The station is part of a group of public broadcasting properties that includes WXXI-FM (105.9), WXXO (91.5 FM), and WXXI-TV (channel 21). Studios and offices are located on State Street in Rochester at the WXXI Public Broadcasting Center. The station transmits at 5,000 watts, using a non-directional antenna by day and a four-tower directional array at night to protect other stations on the 1370 AM frequency. The transmitter is located on French Road in Brighton. Programming is also carried on WXXI-FM and on an HD Radio digital subchannel of WXXO. Weekday programming is drawn primarily from NPR and includes Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, 1A, Marketplace, and Here and Now. A locally produced two-hour interview and call-in program, Connections with Evan Dawson, airs weekdays at noon and repeats at 9 p.m. Overnight programming features the BBC World Service. Weekend programs include Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, On The Media, Hidden Brain, TED Radio Hour, Radiolab, Latino USA, The Splendid Table, and The New Yorker Radio Hour, among others. The station has received numerous local, state, and national awards for its journalism and investigative reporting. The station originally signed on October 27, 1936, as WSAY, founded by Gordon P. Brown with a 250-watt signal on 1210 kHz. It relocated to 1240 kHz in 1941 under the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement and has operated under various formats and owners since that era. The station holds periodic on-air fundraising campaigns to support its public broadcasting mission.
