Broadcasting at 103.3 MHz, this non-profit FM station holds the distinction of being one of the oldest commercially licensed campus radio stations in the United States, with roots tracing to a campus AM station that launched on December 6, 1940. The station received its FM license in 1955 and became the first college station on the FM dial in the country, initially broadcasting at 103.9 MHz before settling at its current frequency in 1962. It is considered a pioneer in FM stereo broadcasting, having transmitted a stereo signal beginning in 1964. The station operates a freeform radio format that encompasses an exceptionally broad range of musical styles, including shoegaze, slowcore, noise music, harsh noise wall, plunderphonics, illbient, jazz, electronic, folk, reggae, ska, metal, world, soul, rap, blues, screamo, and rock. Almost all on-air staff and management are university alumni and students. Funding comes primarily through listener contributions gathered during an annual spring Membership Drive, supplemented by community underwriting contracts with local businesses. The transmitter tower, located in Lawrence Township northeast of Trenton and shared with New Jersey 101.5, produces an effective radiated power of 14,000 watts. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology. Its HD2 digital subchannel carries Indian programming, while oldies programming is heard on the HD3 subchannel. During the 1960s and 1970s, the station joined with other Ivy League universities to form the Ivy Network, sharing programming and resources. The station's slogan has long been "New Jersey's Only Radio Station." Programming includes a diverse lineup of named shows spanning early morning through late night hours.
