A non-commercial FM radio station operating at 88.9 MHz, licensed to Notre Dame, Indiana, and owned by the University of Notre Dame. The station serves the South Bend–Mishawaka metropolitan area and surrounding portions of Indiana and Michigan, a region commonly referred to as Michiana. Daytime programming is dedicated to classical music, while evening hours feature a broad range of genres including jazz, folk, big band, blues, Broadway showtunes, and Celtic music. Extended newscasts air at multiple points throughout the weekday schedule, and the PBS NewsHour is broadcast on weeknight evenings. WSND-FM signed on September 17, 1962, as a 10-watt educational station operated by students during the academic year. In 1971, the station expanded its transmitter power to 3,430 watts and broadened its schedule with the addition of community volunteers. Studios and offices are located in the Duncan Student Center on the Notre Dame campus, with the transmitter situated off Ironwood Road in southern South Bend. The station continues to operate with a combined staff of students and community volunteers, maintaining its dual identity as a training ground for aspiring media professionals and a public service broadcaster for the broader community. Live Metropolitan Opera broadcasts are aired on Saturday afternoons. WSND-FM has periodically organized benefit fundraising events supporting music and healing foundations.
