A progressive and alternative noncommercial FM radio station operating at 91.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 1,500 watts. Owned by Tulane University, the station was established on March 14, 1959, and is staffed by Tulane students and local volunteers. It is notable for being an early professional home of future politician and television personality Jerry Springer. The station's programming spans an unusually wide range of genres, including cutting-edge alternative, electronica, classical, New Age, straight-ahead jazz, folk, blues, Latin, world music, reggae, show tunes, and children's programming. Blues and soul singer Ernie K-Doe, known for "Mother-in-Law," served as a DJ at the station for many years. The station operates 24 hours a day on a nonprofit basis. WTUL went off the air on August 28, 2005, as Hurricane Katrina approached the Gulf Coast. The campus building housing the station sustained flood damage. The station resumed broadcasting on December 15, 2005, using donated studio space in the Carrollton neighborhood of uptown New Orleans, with internet streaming maintained through donated bandwidth from Stanford University's CCRMA. The station subsequently moved to Uptown Square and eventually to a permanent studio in the basement of the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life on the Tulane campus, where it now operates on a full 24-hour schedule. Annual "Rock On Survival Marathon" fundraisers featuring live bands on the Tulane campus are a locally recognized tradition.
