A commercial AM talk radio station licensed to New Orleans, Louisiana, broadcasting at 990 kHz. Owned by Northshore Radio, Inc., a non-profit corporation, the station carries a mix of brokered programming, local talk, and national newscasts via Townhall News. Studios are located on Carondelet Street in New Orleans, while the transmitter is situated off River Road in Jefferson Parish near the Mississippi River. The station signed on January 27, 1946, as WJMR under the ownership of George Mayoral, initially operating as a daytime-only outlet from the Jung Hotel. It served as the AM companion to what is now WEZB 97.1 FM. In the mid-1950s the station gained regional recognition for featuring disc jockey "Poppa Stoppa," who presented early rock and roll programming to New Orleans audiences. The station underwent numerous call sign changes over subsequent decades — including WNNR, WLTS, and WYAT — reflecting shifts in ownership and format strategy. The current WGSO call letters were adopted on December 1, 1993, at which point the station launched an all-news format drawing on CNN Headline News audio. In 2001, it transitioned to a business talk format branded "City Business 990." The station subsequently evolved toward its current community and political talk orientation, self-described as the "Community Voice of the Crescent City." Programming includes local political commentary, the syndicated Moon Griffon Show, and call-in segments.
