A freeform, non-commercial college radio station licensed to the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, operating at 89.3 FM with 400 watts of effective radiated power. The station serves Moscow and the neighboring city of Pullman, Washington, as well as surrounding communities across the Palouse region of the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 1945, KUOI is one of the longer-running college radio operations in the western United States, initially transmitting on the AM dial at 655 kHz with a two-watt transmitter before migrating to 660 kHz at five watts. The station transitioned to FM broadcasting on November 17, 1968, at 89.3 MHz with ten watts of power. Subsequent upgrades brought the signal to fifty watts in stereo in 1977, and to its current 400-watt capacity in January 1995. The station is headquartered on the third floor of the Bruce Pitman Center at the University of Idaho campus. It operates around the clock, staffed by students and community members under the freeform model, which grants programmers broad latitude to play music across any genre within FCC regulations. KUOI does not follow a rigid music format, distinguishing it from many commercial and even some non-commercial broadcasters in the region.
