A community-oriented noncommercial FM radio station broadcasting at 89.9 MHz in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with studios on West Broadway Avenue and a transmitter in Arden Hills. The station is owned and operated by the Center for Communications and Development (CCD), a nonprofit organization based on Minneapolis's north side. It is a member of AMPERS, Minnesota's independent public radio network. Programming is directed primarily at African American listeners and encompasses a broad range of music and spoken-word formats, including hip-hop, R&B, soul, blues, urban gospel, reggae, jazz, and talk shows. The station operates in an urban adult contemporary format. KMOJ originated in 1976 as WMOJ, a very low-power AM station at 1200 kHz with a signal radius of only a few city blocks, broadcasting from studios in the Sumner-Olson and Glenwood-Lyndale public housing developments. It transitioned to FM in September 1978, relaunching as KMOJ at 89.7 FM with 10 watts of power. A frequency change to 89.9 in 1984 accompanied a power increase to 1,000 watts. The studio relocated to a new facility at 501 Bryant Avenue North in 1985. After structural damage condemned the Girard Terrace building, the station moved temporarily to the Uptown neighborhood in 2007 before settling at its current West Broadway and Penn Avenue location in 2010. In 2011, transmitter facilities were upgraded to a new site in Arden Hills with power increased to 6,200 watts. The station broadcasts in HD Radio.
