A digital subchannel of WKNO-FM (91.1 FM), the NPR member station operated by the Mid-South Public Communications Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. WKNO-FM shares facilities and governance with WKNO television (channel 10), a PBS member station, both of which are located on Cherry Farms Road in the Cordova neighborhood of Memphis. The Mid-South Public Communications Foundation is a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of trustees. WKNO-FM provides public radio news and information programming to the Memphis metropolitan area and the broader Mid-South region. The station carries national NPR programming and produces local news content, including a daily newscast covering Tennessee and regional affairs. Coverage areas include state legislative activity, local arts programming, and community affairs relevant to the greater Memphis area. The parent television station, WKNO channel 10, began broadcasting in June 1956 as the first educational television station in Tennessee, initially financed through contributions from the city's commercial television stations and later supported by educational grants. From 1961 to 2009, the operation was conducted from campus locations associated with what became the University of Memphis, though the university never held ownership. The stations moved to their current Cordova facility in 2009. The shared institutional history between the FM radio and television operations reflects a longstanding model of consolidated public media service in the Memphis region.
