A radio station licensed to McPherson, Kansas, operating on 1540 AM with a simulcast on FM translator K255DK at 98.9 FM. Currently owned by Ad Astra Per Aspera Broadcasting, the station has a long local history dating to January 4, 1949, when it first signed on as KNEX. The station was founded by a group of local businesspeople, including a newspaper publisher, a banker, a pharmacist, and an attorney. Its most enduring figure was Claude Hughes, who joined as the station's first engineer in 1949 and rose to station manager by 1956, hosting programs such as "Sunny Side of the Street" and providing weather reports from the "Weather Garden" until his death in 2003. Another notable voice was Bob Hapgood, a drummer for the regional band King Midas and the Muflers, who hosted an oldies program for many years. The station initially held both AM and FM licenses but surrendered the FM license early on due to low FM receiver penetration in the 1940s. FM operations returned in January 1974. A change of ownership in 1979 brought new call letters, and the station passed through several additional owners over the following decades. The FM translator at 98.9 allowed the station to broadcast around the clock for the first time, as the AM signal had historically been limited to daytime hours. Programming today centers on local news, sports, and classic hits.
